In August–September 1941 a large number of Novograd Volynskiy Jews was shot by Sonderkommando 4A in the area of the former shooting range. According to Soviet reports, the Jewish victims were buried in two large graves that had been dug, in the course of several days, by POWs. Apparently, non Jews were also shot and buried at the site. The total number of bodies found at this location was approximately 3,200.

…The Commission carried out the examination of the graves located in a hollow [crater?] at the former shooting range. The grave has the shape of a mound a meter and a half high and measures 15 x 3 meters…. To the west of the grave, in another hollow, there are two more graves. One of them measures 15 x 3 meters; the other -- 3 x 2 meters. In the two larger graves there are bodies of civilians of Jewish origin, in the smaller one - [those of Ukrainians, about 25 of them. Considering the bodies' condition and the testimonies of … the Commission concludes that the shooting was carried out in August-September 1941 and the number of shooting victims was as many as 3,200.… From the questioning of civilians who witnessed the shooting it was learned that the grave had been dug by POWS over the course of several days....
