The first mass shootings of Novograd Volynskiy Jews were carried out in late July – early August 1941. The victims, mostly men, were shot in three bomb craters in a field of the local Machine Tractor Station [MTS], located on Chekhov Street. Some shootings were carried out by Sonderkommando 4A. At least one of the others was carried out by the 8th Infanrty Regiment of the 1st SS Brigade on July 28, 1941. During this murder operation the victims were shot in groups of 100-200. While most of the victims were Jewish, apparently, some non-Jews were shot at the same murder site as well. The total number of victims was 800.

Interview by Mikhail Tyaglyy in 2015
We are in Novograd Volynskiy, at no. 5 Chekhov Street, in the area of the former agricultural equipment station. During the war years the MTS fields used to be here. Seventy-four years ago the first shooting of peaceful civilians, [officially registered?] members of the Novograd Volynskiy Jewish community, was carried out here. It was in the late July 1941, on July 28-29. Here used to be the headquarters of a mechanized infantry regiment. The first shooting of people of the Jewish origin was carried out in the former bomb crater. Here there are three craters. The first one was 10 meters in diameter. POWs were also shot here. In fact the pits are [now] under workshop buildings. Several shootings were carried out here. The exhumation of [the bodies from] only one bomb crater was carried out. The remains of the rest of the victims are still here, I mean they were not buried.
