On August 24, 1942 the Germans arrested a number of civilians and took them to the German headquarters in Belorechenskaya. On the next day at 5 a.m., the Germans took the prisoners, including six Jews, to a pit on the bank of the Belaya River. The victims had to hand over their clothes and the few possessions they had with them. About 57 people were forced to line up and were then shot to death by the Germans and members of the local police force. The victims fell into the pit and were buried there. During the occupation the Germans and their accomplices used the riverbank several other times for mass shootings. In Belorechensk they killed a total of 272 people, including civilians and Soviet POWs.
