On December 17, 1942, German forces arrested the Jews who had fled from the western parts of the Soviet Union to Ladozhskaya County. The Jews were taken south of the city to the bank of the Kuban River. Approximately 3,000 Jews were shoot to death in a pit near the bank of the Kuban River. Some witnesses reported that the water of the river turned red on that day.
