On August 18, 1942, a doctor of the local hospital, Rivka (Revekka) Mukhina, was shot in the hospital yard by a policeman, probably of Ukrainian origin, who was wearing a German uniform. According to some sources, the same day he shot 10-12 old Jews in a communal apartment building; they were patients of a hospital that was temporarily housed in the building.

Varvara Tikhonova, who was born in 1918 and lived in Voronezh during the war years, testified:
I remember that Dr. Rivka Mukhina, about 50 years old, was shot around August 18, 1942. I do not remember [the date] exactly. [She was shot] in a place with no exit in the school yard, 100 meters from the hospital. I am [also] aware of the fact that 10 or 12 old people of Jewish origin were shot the same day in a communal apartment located at no. 150 Anniversary of October 20th Street. All of them were patients [in the hospital temporally located in the communal apartment building]. The shooting was carried out by the same murderer who had shot Rivka Mukhina. I do not know who else participated in the shooting or where the bodies were buried.
