23 Jews from Svyatsk, along with some Communists, were arrested on October 2, 1941 by a German murder squad and taken to the vicinity of Babakov village. On the way they were severely beaten. They were shot to death in a trench near the village.

On October 2, 1941 a German murder squad arrived in Svyatsk by car. They arrested two Communists Party members … and 23 Jews who were active village community members – Yakov Gipkhin, Zalman Zlotnikov, Isaak Zlotnikov, and others.… they were taken 4 kilometers outside of Svyatsk and on the way were beaten with sticks and other objects; their faces and bodies were bleeding. They were shot in a trench by the side of the road near the village of Babakov in the Svyatsk Rural Council area. After covering the bodies of the victims with earth, the murder squad left.
