Murder Story of Kalyus Jews at the Lenin Collective Farm

Murder Site
Lenin Collective Farm near Kalyus
Ukraine (USSR)
On August 20, 1942 Ukrainian auxiliary policemen surrounded the ghetto. Its inmates were told to assemble at the town's square on the pretext that the ghetto was being liquidated and they were being sent to the ghetto in Novaya Ushitsa. Those who had hid but were found were beaten and taken to the square. Then all of them were taken under guard to a ravine near a field of the Lenin Collective Farm, where a pit had been prepared. Upon their arrival at the site the victims were made to sit near the pit and a selection was carried out. A group of able-bodied men was set aside, others - mainly women, little children, and old people - were taken to the pit and shot to death by SD and Gendarmerie men. According to the German report of August 20, 1942 of Petrich, the district Gendarmerie chief of Bar, 240 Jews from Kalyus were murdered. A Soviet (ChGK) report from 1944 indicates that 540 Jews were shot to death at the site.
