On May 27, 1942 about 500 Jews from Zhornishche were taken, partly on foot and partly on carts, toward the town of Ilyintsy and shot together with the Ilyintsy Jews in several pits dug ahead of time in the area of the forest close to Ilyintsy. The massacre was perpetrated by German rural policemen and Ukrainian auxiliaries.

…On May 27, 1942 the Germans gathered all the Jews from the surrounding area of Ilyinets [Ilyintsy] and on one day buried alive up to 8,000 people [sic] in three pits. Our dear ones also perished tragically on that day. Our dear father also lived [only] to that day; he was buried in that pit together with his children and grandchildren….
