In the summer of 1942 the Jews of Dukhovshchina were shot to death by four policemen at the brick factory clay quarry.
From the article of R. Zharikova "I Saw the Jews Being Murdered," published in "Rayonnaya gazeta", July 2, 1992:
…in 1942 everyone was shot. I happened to witness how the brutal massacre against the helpless people was perpetuated. It was a warm summer day….. Suddenly the silence was interrupted by shooting. I saw people standing at the edge of the quarry where clay was dug out for the brick factory. There were many people there. Opposite them there were four policemen with rifles pointed at the heads of the unfortunate ones. They [the policemen] pressed the triggers in cold blood. After each volley people fell into the pit. The executioners annihilated all the Jews they had in their power. The children were not spared either.
