Soon after the occupation began 42 Jews of Vasilyevka were shot in the vicinity of the town. According to some sources the shooting was carried out at an anti-tank trench. According to Soviet documents the number of total Jewish victims from the entire county was 356.

... After the beginning of the occupation of Vasilyevka County the German commandant carried out a violent brutal massacre against the innocent population, against those civilians who were still alive. He had them hanged [sic]. This way 890 people were arrested, of whom 787 people were shot to death; they included 356 members of Jewish families….
