During July 1941, 1,500 men, women and children (according to other sources, 4,500 people) were murdered at the Green Grove (Zalioji), thirteen kilometers from Panevėžys.

... Based on the protocol of the investigation of January 18, 1945, the testimony of Mikolauskas Vintsas, son of Alex, born in 1902, who lives in the town of Panevėžys ... [the Soviet Extraordinary State Commission] established:
A mass murder, mainly of Jewish men, was committed in the Zhelis Forest [Zalioji in Lithuanian], Panevėžys County, in the same volost [small administrative unit]. German lieutenant Hamman led the killing operation. Shootings took place at this site from August-September 1941, once a week, on Mondays. Each time, 250 people were shot. The victims were brought to the murder site from the Panevėžys prison.
Altogether 1,500 people were shot in the Zhelis Forest ....
