On May 29, 1942 the Jews of Novo-Zhitomir were assembled. Those who were capable of working were dispatched to the Shirokoye labor camp to work on the Krivoy Rog-Dnepropetrovsk Road. The remaining Jews - women, children, and old people - were locked into two houses and, either the next day or two days later, were taken to the village of Zlatoustovka, where they were shot at a pit, along with Jews from Izluchistoye, Kamenka, and Trudovoye. The total number of victims of this massacre was 540. It is unknown how many of them were from Novo-Zhitomir.
