In October 1941 members of Einsatzkommando 6 of Einsatzgruppe C ordered the liquidation of the Igren mental asylum. Only able-bodied patients were to be temporarily spared. The first to be murdered were Jewish patients. The victims were led in groups into one of the asylum rooms, where they were given a posionous injection and left to die.
According to Soviet documents, a total of 1,000 patients from Igren were murdered in 1941-1942 (400 according to the German report). It is not known how many Jews were among these victims.
