Very soon after the beginning of the German occupation of Lenino Germans and local policemen assembled between 67 and 77 Jews of both sexes and various ages and took them to the northwestern outskirts of the village, to anti-tank trenches on the banks of the Mereya River (The site is now covered by the estuary of the Lyadnaya River.) There the [adult] Jews were shot while the children were thrown alive into the trenches.

From the testimony of Stefan Evmenenko:
...Almost immediately after the arrival of the Germans either 67 or 77 Jews were shot in Lenino (the exact number is not known). They were shot at the river on the outskirts of the village, near today's museum, close to the bridge.... The shooting was carried out by both Germans and policemen since the Germans did not known who was [Jewish and, hence] to be taken to be shot. The policemen were so worked up that they could have killed not only their Jewish neighbors but even their own fathers. One boy who was wounded and was running away from the trench was caught by policemen who beat him with their rifle butts. Women, children, and old people were rounded up for the first shooting; there were few men since they had all been drafted into the [Red] Army....
