Murder story of Rakow Jews in the Raków Synagogue

Murder Site
Rakow
Poland
On February 2, 1942, SS-men and local policemen surrounded Raków’s ghetto, which still contained approximately 1,000 Jews. These Jews were taken in groups to the entrance to the town’s synagogue, where they were shot with sub-machine guns.... 10 strong Jewish men were selected to throw the bodies into the synagogue. Afterwards they were forced inside and the building was set on fire with the people inside. It is estimated that on that day approximately 950 Jews - children, women, and men - were killed next to and inside the synagogue.

Hillel Eydlman, who was born in Raków, testified:
Testimony of Shaul Shenker, born in Plunge, Lithuania, regarding the fate of the Jews of the town and their murder by Germans and Lithuanian collaborators, 1941
... On the day the Raków ghetto was liquidated 50 German, Lithuanian, and Polish policemen arrived from Raków, Horodok, and Radoszkowicze. They ordered all the Jews to leave their homes and gather at the synagogue with their belongings. About 8:00 a.m the Jews were driven out out of the synagogue, but after their possessions had been taken from them, they were told to enter again. Then the policemen went up to the womens' section [of the synagogue] and threw down some grenades so that all the people were killed by fire. Only seven men managed to escape. When the ghetto was burning, Mrs. Milshtein, who was pregnant, managed to flee (I don't know the circumstances), but was caught after she had gone one kilometer. The butcher Shaya Shenkelewicz who ran away was caught too. The policemen Simon (I don't remember his family name), a shoemaker who makes uppers, and Kora (a nickname) caught him....

Shmaryahu Pogolansky, who lived in Raków, testified:
…And this is what happened on the day of catastrophe, as we learned later: on the eve of February 2, 1942 the ghetto was surrounded and all the Jews, numbering 950, were concentrated in the yard of the synagogue. Ten of the strongest men were selected while the rest were taken in groups to the threshold of the synagogue, where they were all shot to death with submachine-guns. Those who were taken aside at first were ordered to throw all the others into the synagogue, after which they themselves were thrown in along with them [alive] without being shot, the building was set on fire. Thus, all of them were totally burned until they were dust and ashes....
