Murder story of Monastyrishche Jews in the Burlakov Forest

Murder Site
Burlakov Forest
Ukraine (USSR)
On May 29, 1942 Monastyrishche was surrounded by Hungarian troops and Ukrainian policemen. All Jews of the town, as well as those brought to Monastyrishche from the surrounding localities, were taken to the market square. There those capable of work were taken aside while, on the following morning, the rest of the men, the women, and children were taken to the Burlakov Forest outside the town, forced to dig their own graves and undress, and then shot to death. The number of victims in this massacre is given as several hundred (in German sources) or 5,000 Jews (in Soviet sources). Several months after the first murder operation the Germans carried out a second one. Neither the exact date of the second killing nor the actual number of victims is known. A third operation was carried out on August 20, 1943. In this operation about 400 craftsmen who had been spared in the first two massacres were murdered.

… On May 29, 1942 the village of Monastyrishche was surrounded by 600 Hungarians and 500 policemen from four counties: Monastyrishche, Oratov, Dashev, and Ilyntsy. The Hungarians and police were armed with automatic weapons and rifles, they also had machine-guns and mortars, as well as artillery. The Jews were driven from their homes and their houses were looted. Those who resisted eviction were shot on the spot; those who were ill were taken on stretchers and loaded onto trucks. All of the inhabitants were collected on the market square, forced onto trucks, and taken away. In the town one heard the incredible screaming of children and the groans of old people. There were cases when mothers left their children in the hope of saving them, but the Hungarians and police simply grabbed them and killed them right away. The massacre of the population took place as follows: The German executioners brought the doomed ones to the murder site and ordered them to take off all their clothes and to lie face down in the pit. The Hitlerites used automatic weapons to shoot those lying there in the back of their necks. Then, in the same way, they placed another layer of people on top of the corpses of those already killed and killed them, then a third layer, etc., until the pit was full. Children were thrown live into the pit and, afterwards, the pits were covered with earth. The corpses were lightly covered with earth. Everywhere there were pools of blood. The ground heaved for a long time since not all of the victims had been killed, some were still alive. That is how 4,917 people were massacred….
