On March 3, 1942 a German killing unit of 30-40 men arrived in Ryasna from the town of Gorki. With help from the local police the unit rounded up about 600 local Jews, along with refugees who fled to the town when the war broke out. The Jews were taken to a ravine 1.5 kilometers east of Ryasna. At the site the Jews were forced to undress and lie down in pits, where they were shot to death. Local residents were forced to cover over the bodies.

Ivan Naumenko, who was born in 1927 and lived in the village of Matsutovka, testifies:
... In March 1942 the streets where the Jews lives were cordoned off and all of them were forced into the bakery. Some people attempted to escape but they were caught and shot. A Jewish barber sought to hide in a hospital where wounded prisoners of war were treated, but he was discovered there.
The first to be shot were the young men, then the children, women, and elderly. They were led to the ravine in twos. I was still a lad, they ordered me to cover over the bodies. It was very cold and there was snow on the ground. A girl who had completed grade 10 and was teaching in a school hid in a pile of clothing; when they picked up the clothes, she was found and shot.
In the evening we threw snow onto the still warm bodies and it melted. In the morning they again brought people to cover the bodies. Policemen stood guard; two Germans were shooting, while a third, wearing a tall peaked cap, stood nearby.
Before they were shot, the Jews were forced to undress. Their clothing and all the things that were taken from the huts where the Jews were living were taken to a store.... Apparently it was announced that the things would be given out. A crowd of people from our village and the neighboring ones gathered in front of the store. Germans from the local garrison were throwing clothes out of the windown and tearing apart pillows and throwing them into the crowd. The feathers filled the air. The peasant grabbed the items while the Germans filmed the scene....
