Babanka

Community
Babanka
Ukraine (USSR)
The first Jews settled in Babanka as early as the mid-18th century. Local Jews made their living from agriculture, and the town had Jewish-owned shops and a flour mill. During the Russian Civil War, the Jewish community of Babanka suffered from attacks by Petliura's Ukrainian troops and various gangs. In 1930, the town was home to 103 Jews, out of a total population of 4,034. German troops occupied Babanka and the surrounding area on August 5, 1941. The few Jews who had failed to evacuate were shot in the spring of 1942.
