Chervonoye
Ukraine (USSR)
The earliest reference to the presence of Jews in Chervonoye dates to 1765, when the village was home to ninety Jews. In 1787, there were 105 Jews in Chervonoye, and they owned twenty houses. In 1897, the local Jewish community had 711 members, who made up twenty-seven percent of the total population of the town. By 1914, the Jews of Chervonoye had come to play a major role in the local commerce, and they owned several shops in the town. In 1937, Chervonoye was incorporated into the Andrushevka County. In 1939, the town was home to 411 Jews. Chervonoye was occupied by the Germans on July 7, 1941. The local Jews, along with Jews from the nearby villages of Malyye Moshkovtsy and Krylovka, were shot in two murder operations, in late August 1941 and April 1942. Chervonoye was liberated by the Red Army on December 29, 1943.
