Slavyansk
Ukraine (USSR)
In 1939, Slavyansk was home to 2,050 Jews, who made up about 3 percent of the total population. The town was occupied by German troops on September 26, 1941. Some Jews had managed to flee into the Soviet interior prior to that. According to Soviet documents, individual Jews were shot in Slavyansk during the period from October 1941 until late February 1942, although these sources do not specify the shooting locations. Non-Jews married to Jews were also shot in the town, as were the offspring of such mixed marriages. The major murder operation against the local Jews took place in early December 1941. Slavyansk was liberated by the Red Army on September 6, 1943.
