Glinsk
Ukraine (USSR)
Although Glinsk lay outside the Pale of Settlement, Jews began to settle there already in the early 19th century. The subsequent period saw the growth of the local Jewish community, with the Jews playing an important role in the economic development of the town. They established their own schools, synagogue, and cemetery. In 1910, the town was home to 178 Jews. Under Soviet rule, many local Jews left Glinsk for larger towns and cities. In 1939, the town was home to only forty-six Jews, who made up about one percent of the total population. The Germans occupied Glinsk on September 14, 1941. A total of about 130 people, including several Jewish families, were killed in two executions (in November 1941, and then sometime in February-April 1942) at a cattle burial ground near the town. The Red Army liberated Glinsk on September 10, 1943.
