Artemovsk
Ukraine (USSR)
In 1939, Artemovsk was home to 5,299 Jews, who made up about 10 percent of the total population. Following the Nazi invasion of the USSR, a large number of local Jews evacuated into the Soviet interior. Artemovsk was occupied by German troops on either October 31 or November 1, 1941. On November 19, 1941, the German authorities issued an order requiring the Jews to be registered at the local commandant's office and wear special armbands. The Jewish population was liquidated in a large-scale operation in early January 1942. Artemovsk was liberated by the Red Army on September 5, 1943. In 2016, Artemovsk regained its former name Bakhmut, by which it had been known prior to 1924.
