Jews first settled in Rogachov in the 19th century. In 1897 1,303 Jews lived in the town, where they comprised 94 percent of the total population. In 1920 Budyonny's Cavalry Army carried out a pogro, in which more than 30 Jews were murdered and much Jewish property was looted. In 1927 the 762 local Jews comprisedor 79 percent of the population of the town. There was a Yiddish school in the town in the 1920s. Rogachov was occupied by the Germans in early July 1941. They ordered the Jews to relocate to a single street, wear a yellow star, and perform forced accompanied by the abuse of the Ukrainian police. The Jews were killed in three murder operations. First, the Jewish men were killed in August 1941. Most of the remaining Jewish adults in late September 1941. The Jewish children were killed several days later. With their families, 20-25 Jewish artisans who had been selected to work for the Germans and, thus, left alive were sent to the ghetto of Novograd Volynskiy. Rogachov was liberated by the Red Army in early January 1944.
