Gulkevichi
Russia (USSR)
Since the town of Gulkevichi had been outside the Pale of Settlement, no Jews lived there even after the Bolshevik Revolution. However, with the German invasion of the USSR on June 22, 1941, Gulkevichi County became an area of civilian evacuation and refuge, including of Jews. German forces captured Gulkevichi at the end of August 1942. The occupiers immediately established an auxiliary police force and the Jews of the town had to wear a Star of David on their sleeves. On an unknown date the Jews were arrested and taken to the old town prison. After they were robbed by the Germans and their accomplices, they were shot to death at the agricultural experiment station outside the town. Between 130 and 150 Jews were killed there. The Red Army liberated Gulkevichi in January 27, 1943.
