With the German invasion of the USSR on June 22, 1941, Armavir became a destination of civilian evacuation and many Jews, among others, made their way to Armavir.
German forces captured the town in August 1942.
The first anti-Jewish murder operation took place at an orphanage, where 20 Jews - children and their care-takers - were killed.
The Germans forced the Jews to establish a Jewish council and to wear a white Star of David on their chests. The German military administration arrested both Jews and some non-Jews, and shot and buried them at an anti-tank trench northeast of Armavir, as well as Jews from the Liebknecht County.
In the course of several mass murder operations in Armavir and surrounding areas the Germans killed 526 Jews.
The Red Army liberated Armavir in January 1943.
