Troyanov
Ukraine (USSR)
The first reference to Jews in Troyanov relates to the mid-18th century. At the end of the 19th century, the Jewish population of Troyanov numbered about 1,469 and comprising 18.6 percent out of the total population. In 1905 the town suffered from several pogroms, after which the Jews of Troyanov, together with the Jewish community in Zhitomir, organized a Jewish self-defense force. During the Soviet period a Jewish kolkhoz was established in Troyanov. In 1939, the town's 581 Jews comprised 11.3 percent of the total population. German forces occupied the town on July 15, 1941. They forced the Jews into a ghetto, where they suffered from hunger. Several mass murders of Jews took place in Troyanov. On August 9, 1941 a unit of German military engineers killed on 22 Jews whom they identified with the Communists. Between August 18 and 20, 1941 26 Jews were murdered in Troyanov and the village of Rudne. In October 1941 the Germans killed 493 Jews. The Red Army liberated Troyanov on January 2, 1944.
