Rzhev
Russia (USSR)
The first Jews settled in Rzhev at the end of the 19th century.

In 1939 Rzhev had 457 Jews, who comprised approximately 9 percent of the town's total population.

At the beginning of the war many civilian residents of Rzhev, including many Jews, suceeded in leaving in the evacuation that was organized by the authorities or in fleeing on their own.

The Germans occupied the city on October 14, 1941. Shortly afterwards the local German administration established a ghetto in Rzhev.

The ghetto was liquidated in the summer of 1942, when 38 Jews were shot to death.

The Red Army liberated Rzhev on March 3, 1943.
