Loknya
Russia (USSR)
In 1939 Loknya's 193 residents comprised 8 percent of the entire population. The Germans occupied the town on July 26, 1941. During the first days of the occupation the Germans arrested 51 Jews and forced them into a house (located at 11 Sotsialisticheskaya Street), which they declared a ghetto. Local policemen guarded the house. Nevertheless, some youths succeeded in leaving and obtaining food for the imprisoned residents. During the night betweem February 1 and 2, 1942 the Germans took 37 or 38 Jews to the village of Danilovka and shot them to death. In the spring and in December 1942 the Germans murdered members of three Jewish families. The Red Army liberated Loknya on February 26, 1944.
