After Nazi Germany invaded the USSR on June 22, 1941, many refugees from Ukraine, including many Jews, sought shelter in Belgorod. The Germans occupied the city on October 8, 1941.
The Germans registered the Jews and began to use them for forced labor.
At the beginning of January 1942 the Germans forced the Jews to leave their homes. Then they took about 2,000 Jews and burned them to death in a barn.
In February 1942 the Germans arrested 400 Jews and killed them in the village of Mikhailovka, where they were shot or burned to death.
The Red Army liberated Belgorod on February 2, 1943.
