Zablocie

In 1921, under Polish rule, there were 40 Jewish families living in Zabłocie. In the 1930s this number declined to 30. Most of the Jews were lumber merchants or artisans. In September 1939, with the arrival of the Red Army in the village following the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, Zabłocie became part of Soviet Ukraine. Zabłocie was occupied by the Germans on June 24, 1941. Apparently in May 1942, Jews from nearby villages, including a group of skilled workers from the village of Krymno, were incarcerated in a large barrack surrounded by a wooden fence and guarded by Ukrainian auxiliary policemen. The Jews of Zabłocie itself apparently lived outside the ghetto in their homes near the village railroad station. On January 9, 1943 all the Jews held in Zabłocie were shot to death outside the village, near the nearby village of Tur. Zablocie was liberated by the Red Army on July 22, 1944.
