Uvarovichi

Jews apparently settled in Uvarovichi in the second half of the 19th century. In the early Soviet period over half of the Jews there worked as tailors, cobblers, blacksmiths, or bakers. In the mid-1920s three cooperatives were established and members of 52 Jewish families were employed there. During the same decade the town had a Yiddish elementary school. In 1939 the Jewish population of Uvarovichi numbered 517 and comprised 13.3 percent of the total population. The Germans occupied Uvarovichi in August 1941. The local Jews were killed in a number of murder operations. Uvarovich was liberated by the Red Army in November 1943.
