Rovnoye
Ukraine (USSR)
Jews began to settle in Rovnoye in the late 19th century. The local Jews earned their living as artisans or small businessmen. Because of political and economic difficulties many Jews left the town during the early Soviet period. In 1923 the town had a Yiddish school with 95 pupils, although most Jewish children studied at a local Ukrainian school. In 1939 the remaining 106 Jews in Rovnoye comprised 1.4 per cent of the total population. Rovnoye was occupied by the Germans on August 3, 1941. Some Jews managed to escape. The several dozen who did not were shot in the fall of 1941 or the winter of 1942. The town was liberated by the Red Army on March 16, 1944.
