Znamenka
Ukraine (USSR)
Znamenka was founded in 1869 as a station of the railroad from Odessa to Kharkov. Jews settled there about the same time. In May 1919 the Jewish population suffered from a pogrom. In 1939 Znamenka's 653 Jews comprised about 5 percent of the total population. Some Jews apparently fled eastward before the town was occupied by the Germans on August 6, 1941. Several dozen Jews were shot to death in the fall of 1941 near the radio station. Znamenka was liberated by the Red Army on December 9, 1943.
