Ershtmaysk
Ukraine (USSR)
Ershtmaysk (the name was derived from the Yiddish word "1st of May", the date of Labor Day in the Soviet Union and elsewhere) was a Jewish agricultural settlement founded in 1926. In the 1920s and 1930s the village was the seat of a rural council. The Germans occupied the Ershtmaysk area in mid August 1941. Soon after the start of the occupation about 800 Jews from Ershtmaysk itself and the surrounding area were murdered in the vicinity of the village. The whole area was liberated by the Red Army in mid-March 1944. In 1944 the name of the village was changed to Pershetravneve ("1st of May" in Ukrainian).
