Snigirevka

In 1939, Snigirevka was home to 224 Jews, who made up 4.4 percent of the total population. In 1931, a Jewish collective farm was established near Snigirevka. It was named "Royter Putilovets" (Red Putilov worker), in honor of the famous Putilov factory in Leningrad. This collective farm later became a mixed Jewish-Ukrainian one. Following the German invasion of the USSR, Snigirevka saw an influx of Jewish refugees from Bessarabia. The town was occupied by German troops on August 18, 1941. Few local Jews had been able to leave in time. According to several eyewitness accounts, anywhere between 30 and 100 Jews from Snigirevka and nearby localities were murdered in the vicinity of the town in late September 1941. Snigirevka was liberated by the Red Army on March 14, 1944.
