Veselaya
Ukraine (USSR)
Vesyolaya was founded in 1845 as a Jewish agricultural colony by Jews from Vitebsk and Mogilev (Belorussia). In pogroms during the Russian civil war (1918-1922) 7 Jews were murdered and 25 Jewish houses and several shops were destroyed. In 1929 a kolkhoz named after Karl Liebknecht was established in Vesyolaya and the colony was included in the Novozlatopol Jewish National [Ethnic] County. On the eve of the Soviet-German war the population of the colony numbered 275. The colony was occupied by German troops in the mid-October 1941 or, according to another source) in mid-September 1941. At the beginning of the German occupation 63 Jews were murdered (according to some sources in a pit on the territory of the kolkhoz). Vesyolaya was liberated by the Red Army in the middle of September 1943. After the war Vesyolaya was renamed Gupalovka (Gulyay Pole County; in 1968 the village was liquidated and its population relocated.
