Mikhaylovka
Ukraine (USSR)
Small numbers of Jews began to settle in Mikhaylovka from the time it was established at the beginning of the 19th century. From 1882 to 1903 the tsarist authorities banned Jews from living there, but as soon as the ban was lifted, the Jews returned. By 1910 the Jewish population had increased to 926 people or 4 percent of Mikhaylovka’s population. Local Jews mostly worked in small trade or were artisans. A number of Jews were murdered in a pogrom perpetuated in 1919 by the solders of Denikin's White Army. In 1939 Mikhaylovka's 102 Jews comprised 0.6 percent of the total population. The town was occupied on October 4, 1941. 148 Jews were murdered at the beginning of November. Mikhaylovka was liberated by the Red Army on October 27, 1943.
