Ichnya
Ukraine (USSR)
Jews settled in Ichnya at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1881 a pogrom resulted in the pillaging and destruction of Jewish homes and stores. In 1882 a tsarist edict required local Jews to leave Ichnya. They were able to return only in 1903. In 1919 22 Jews were killed in a pogrom carried out by units of Denikin’s White Army. Pogroms, civil war, antisemitism, and repression led many Jews to move to towns with larger Jewish communities. In 1939 there were 148 Jews in the village, comprising one percent of the total population.

Many Jews succeeding in leaving before Ichnya was occupied by German troops on September 14, 1941. A total of 225 people were murdered in Ichnya County, including Jews of the village.

Ichnya was liberated by the Red Army on September 15, 1943.
