Mezhirov
Ukraine (USSR)
The origins of the Jewish community in Mezhirov date back to the eighteenth century. During the Soviet period, a Yiddish school operated in the town. In 1926, 1,015 Jews lived in Mezhirov, accounting for 24 percent of the town’s total population. The Germans occupied Mezhirov in July 1941. Only some of the local Jews managed to evacuate the town; the majority were taken to the vicinity of the Jewish cemetery of Brailov and shot in the murder operation of February 12, 1942. The Red Army liberated Mezhirov in January 1944.
