In 1939 Chkalovo became a county center in the Dnepropetrovsk District.

Chkalovo was occupied by German forces on August 17, 1941. In September 1941 about 1,000 Jews from Chkalovo and other villages of the County were shot near the Chkalovo orphanage, which was used as a prison during the occupation.

Chkalovo was liberated by the Red Army on February 9, 1944.
