Gomel
Belorussia (USSR)
Gomel was a Jewish village. In 1920 its population included about 130 Jews, who comprised approximately 35 percent of the total population. In 1925, 22 of the 47 Jewish families were engaged in agriculture. The village had a textile plant, a sugar factory, and two Yiddish schools. The Germans occupied the village of Gomel on July 15, 1941 after many Jews had succeeded in fleeing. During operations in October 1941 and in early 1942 the Germans murdered the remaining Jews in Gomel. The village was liberated by the Red Army in June 1944.
