A resident of Bolshoy Tokmak, Lev Avrutis, who was evacuated during the war years, questioned local witnesses of the shooting and, on that basis, managed to identify the shooting site. Then he initiated the erection of a granite memorial there with an inscription in Russian that said: "Eternal memory to the Jews and prisoners of war from the Red Army from the town of Tokmak and the town of Molochansk who were shot by the fascists in October 1941. The Tokmak Jewish religious community."
