Adrianna & Franciszek Tomek
Tomek, Franciszek Tomek, Adriana When German forces occupied Kraków, in September 1939, Oscar and Paula Wasserman decided to flee the city along with their baby daughter Liddi, and head east. They only managed to make it as far as Lvov, where they settled under the Soviet occupation. After the Germans invaded Lvov in 1941, the family was sent to a work camp near Dęnica. In the fall of 1942 they managed to escape the camp, and found refuge with the Tomek family. Franciszek Tomek was a retired General in the Polish army. He lived in the town of Radziszów with his wife Adriana and her mother and sister. The Tomeks welcomed the Wassermans into their home and provided for all their needs, in spite of the mortal danger involved in such an act. During frequent raids by both German forces and Polish militias the Wassermans would hide in a closet in the Tomeks' basement, sometimes for days. In January, 1943, while still in hiding, the Wassermans had a baby boy, Henry. The Wassermans stayed with the Tomeks until the area was liberated by the Red Army in February 1945. After the war the Wassermans immigrated to Israel. Franciszek Tomek died in the 1950's and Adriana moved to Yugoslavia, to where Oscar Wasserman sent her letters and packages of clothes and other goods until she passed away. On September 13, 2011, Yad Vashem recognized Franciszek and Adriana Tomek as Righteous Among the Nations.
