Mr. & Mrs. Guery
Coudert, Albert Coudert, Odette Guery, Emile Guery, Marthe Sigmund Friedman left Poland in the early 1930s with his wife and settled in Strasbourg. There, they had two children: Yves (b. 1932) and Roland (b. 1935). When war broke out, the family fled the area for fear of a German invasion. They moved south, which was believed to be safer at the time, and after a long and difficult journey, settled in a small house in Chamborêt (Haute Vienne). According to Yves Friedman’s testimony, everyone in the village knew of their identity but kept it a secret. The Friedmans managed to lead a relatively normal life in Chamborêt until the night of January 2, 1944, when French police came to arrest Sigmund. Sigmund barely had time to escape, and ran toward the fields. The next morning he went to Albert and Odette Coudert, asking for their help. Albert and Odette took in Sigmund without hesitation, and brought him to their farm. Sigmund went up to hide in the attic, and overheard a conversation between Odette and some policemen, who had come looking for him. Odette denied ever seeing the refugee. Through a mutual friend, Albert passed information about Sigmund’s new abode to his family, and Yves brought him some clothes. Albert and Odette took care of Sigmund for the rest of the war, often moving him from place to place so he could not be followed. One of the farms that welcomed Sigmund in belonged to Emile and Marthe Guery. The farm was situated in Mont, not far from Chamborêt, where Marthe was principal of the school. Emile and Marthe took care of Sigmund for 15 days, denying any knowledge of him when asked by the Germans. Emile and Marthe Guery also helped another Jewish family, the Gerlichs, hiding them every time the Germans searched the area. Thanks to the courage of these two families, who never asked for anything in return, Sigmund survived the war and was reunited with his family. On December 26, 2010, Yad Vashem recognized Albert and OdetteCoudert, and Emile and Marthe Guery as Righteous Among the Nations.
