Einem, Gottfried von
Gottfried von Einem, the world famous Austrian composer, was born on January 24, 1918 in Bern, Switzerland, the son of the Austrian military attaché. When he was looking in 1943 for a rehearsal master for a ballet he had composed, “Princess Turandot,” he was introduced to the undercover Jewish musician Konrad Latte, whom he engaged for the post. The composer, who was hostile to the regime and knew Latte’s real identity, on a number of occasions provided him with his own identity card. He also provided Latte with food ration cards, money, and even a Reich Music Chamber ID, which entitled him to engage in musical activities in public. .
On August 12, 2002, Yad Vashem recognized Gottfried von Einem as Righteous Among the Nations.
