ZABŁOCKI, MICHAŁ
The Zabłocki family – Franciszek (who was a member of the AK), Karolina, their adult son Michał, and three young children - lived in Dolina, in the Stanisławów district.
They had trade contacts with the local Jews from long before the war. After the establishment of a ghetto in Dolina, Jews used to come at night to the Zabłockis’ home to get food for themselves and their families. Karolina also baked bread that Michał delivered to the ghetto.
In the summer of 1942, the Germans began the liquidation of the ghetto in Dolina. The Zabłockis’ home was the destination of those who managed to escape. The Zabłockis fed the fugitives and offered them one night’s stay, after which they led them to the forest, where a partisan group was located in the Caparthian Mountains.
In the fall of 1942, AK forces broke into the Dolina prison, freeing many Jews and Poles. The newly freed prisoners received first aid at the Zabłockis’ home, and were then directed to the forest where deep warm bunkers had been dug. There was linen, food, and other essentials inside the bunkers.
In the summer of 1943, the Germans conducted a search of the Zabłockis’ home, looking for Jews. Franciszek was arrested because weapons were discovered. He was taken to prison in Stanisławów and charged with helping Jews and with participating in the AK. In the fall of 1943, he was transported to Majdanek and from there to the Mauthausen-Gusen camp, where he was murdered on December 9, 1944.
“Father lived with Jews, helped them during the hard years of their extermination, together with them he died,” wrote Michał Zabłocki in his testimony.
The fates of the Jews that Zabłocki helped are not known. Michał, his mother, and the rest of the children moved to Gdańsk after the war. From there, he wrote a detailed testimony about the help his family lent to Jews during the war and about his father fighting alongside thepartisans.
On March 19, 1986, Yad Vashem recognized Franciszek Zabłocki, his wife, Karolina Zabłocka, and their son, Michał Zabłocki, as Righteous Among the Nations.
