Jędrzejko Leonia Jędrzejko Jan Jędrzejko Jozef Senkow-Jędrzejko Maria In March 1943, a farmer in the village of Jelechowice, in the Lwów district, turned to Jan and Leonia Jędrzejko asking them to hide four Jewish refugees from the town of Złoczów, whose hiding place had become too dangerous. The Jędrzejkos, who knew the refugees, realized that the neighbor was simply covering up for his own reluctance to help them. Nevertheless, the Jędrzejkos agreed to put up Ida, Estera, and Chaya Wiertenberg and their stepmother, Nechama. The Jędrzejkos made the four Jewish refugees feel welcome, saw to all their needs and took excellent care of them, without expecting anything in return. At the time, Markus Zimand, Chaya’s husband, was interned in a labor camp near Złoczów. Jędrzejko, in an act of outstanding courage, organized Zimand’s escape from the camp in the middle of the night. Despite their extreme poverty, the Jędrzejkos shared their meager fare with the five Jewish refugees, without ever complaining. In risking their lives to save their persecuted friends, the Jędrzejkos were guided by their religious faith and love of mankind, which triumphed over adversity. The five refugees stayed with the Jędrzejkos until the area was liberated by the Red Army in July 1944. On February 24, 1988, Yad Vashem recognized Leonia and Jan Jędrzejko, their son Józef and their daughter, Maria Senkow-Jędrzejko, as Righteous Among the Nations. File 3812
