Chucherko, Stefan Chucherko, Zofia Chucherko, Eugeniusz Chucherko, Henryk Chucherko, Leopold On a summer’s night in 1942, starving and wary, Bolek and Lola Feiler knocked on the door of the Chucherkos, humble peasants who lived in the village of Nowa Gora, in the Chrzanow district. The Feilers, who had escaped the Aktion in Pilica, their hometown, in which all the Jews in the area had been killed, asked the Chucherkos if they could stay for the day, until they had recuperated. The day turned into two years! Stefan Chucherko also agreed to hide Henryk and Sala Feiler, Feiler’s brother and sister-in-law. A few days later, they were joined by Shaya Grossman, Sala’s brother. Chucherko and his three sons, Eugeniusz, Henryk and Leopold, built a hiding place for the Jewish refugees. At first, the refugees paid for their upkeep, but even after their money ran out, the Chucherkos continued to look after them. In 1944, Lola Feiler gave birth to a baby boy while in hiding. One of the Chucherkos left the baby on the doorstep of a childless couple, who adopted him as their own. In December 1944, Shaya Grosman died in hiding and was buried under the flagstones of the larder. On March 3, 1983, Yad Vashem recognized Zofia Chucherko, her husband, Stefan Chucherko and their sons, Eugeniusz, Henryk, and Leopold, as Righteous Among the Nations.
