The Bachuls, a poor, working-class family of seven, lived in the village of Osielec near Maków Podhalanski, in the Kraków district. Their main source of income came from outside the village: Stanisław Bachul and his sons, Władysław and Roman, were employed on the railroad, while a daughter, Janina, worked in Kraków. The family became acquainted with Miriam Stern when she stayed in the village one summer, and sold fabric to Ludwika Bachul. During the German occupation, Miriam – who was pregnant – was interned in the Kraków ghetto, and Janina helped her give birth to a daughter, Sara, outside the ghetto. Miriam returned with the baby to the ghetto, but found it difficult to hide her during the recurring Aktionen. Janina offered to take the infant to her parents’ home, and the latter agreed to shelter her. Ludwika and her daughters, Maria and Anna, cared for the Jewish child as though she were a member of the family, and despite the neighbors’ suspicions regarding Sara’s origins, kept her in their home until the end of the war. Miriam, who survived the war, returned to Poland and found her four-year-old daughter happy and well cared for. The Bachuls received nothing in return for giving the child a home, and their motives in saving her were purely humanitarian. In 1946, Miriam and Sara immigrated to Israel, from where they remained in contact with Ludwika until her death. In 1987, Sara visited the home of her former protectors, and gratefully acknowledged their generosity in her hour of need.
On September 12, 1990, Yad Vashem recognized Stanisław and Ludwika Bachul and their children, Janina Siwiec nee Bachul, Anna Radoń nee Bachul, Maria Rzeszutko nee Bachul, and Roman and Władysław Bachul, as Righteous Among the Nations.
