Janulewicz Bolesław Janulewicz Bolesław (son) Babarowska-Janulewicz Leokadia In January 1943, wounded and bleeding, Leizer Grozalski and his wife, Sima, escaped the Aktionen that accompanied the liquidation of the Grodno ghetto. After spending two days in abandoned cellars, ruined houses, and temporary shelters, the Grozalskis knocked on the door of Bolesław Janulewicz’s in-laws, asking for help. Although they had no room, Bolesław, who happened to be present when the refugees arrived, felt sorry for the wounded Grozalski and his desperate wife, and agreed to take them home with him. Since his apartment, which he shared with his wife and baby boy, was cramped, Janulewicz hid the Grozalskis in the coal cellar. When, however, he realized that Grozalski’s health was suffering, Janulewicz asked his father, a widower who lived with his daughter, Leokadia, on a small farm across the Niemen River, for advice. Without a moment’s hesitation, the father agreed to shelter the refugees and he and his son dug a hiding place for them beneath the pigsty. Despite their straitened circumstances, Bolesław’s father and sister took good care of the Grozalskis, nursed Leizer back to health, and watched out for their safety. The Janulewiczes, guided by humanitarian motives, which overrode considerations of personal safety or economic hardship, looked after the Grozalskis until the area was liberated by the Red Army in September 1944. After the war, the Grozalskis immigrated to the United States where, for many years, they kept up a steady correspondence with Boleslaw and his sister, Leokadia, their saviors. On August 21, 1991, Yad Vashem recognized Bolesław Janulewicz, his son Bolesław Janulewicz, and his daughter, Leokadia Babarowska-Janulewicz, as Righteous Among the Nations. File 5009
